Tallest Buildings and Skyscrapers in Connecticut
Connecticut is home to some large financial institutions especially insurance companies so it is not surprising the state has some fairly tall buildings. Most of these tall skyscrapers are located in the capital city of Hartford but a couple of the buildings are located in different locations and include the second largest hotel casino in the United States as well as a building with great views of the Yale University campus. One of the tallest buildings in Connecticut was the 7th tallest building in the world when it was completed in 1919 and all of these builds are at least 380 feet in height.
1) City Place I - 535 feet
The tallest building in Connecticut and in the capital city of Hartford is the 535 foot tall City Place I skyscraper located at 185 Asylum Street. Completed in 1980 the City Place I building has 38 floors and was built by the well known architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. Made up mostly of office space City Place I also has some retail establishments and restaurants on the lower floors and is located near the best hotels in downtown Hartford.
2) Travelers Towers - 527 feet
Located at One Tower Square in downtown Hartford is the historically significant 34 story Travelers Tower building. Completed in 1919 at a height of 527 feet the Travelers Tower was the 7th tallest building in the world at that time and the first skyscraper above 500 feet outside of New York City. Today the Travelers Tower is the 2nd tallest building in Hartford and in Connecticut and has an observation deck that is open to the public and is free of charge. Travelers Tower was built to house the headquarters of the Travelers Insurance Company.
3) Goodwin Square Hotel and Office Tower - 522 feet
Located at 225 Asylum Street is the Goodwin Square Hotel and Office Tower which at 522 feet in height is the 3rd tallest building in Hartford and in the state of Connecticut. Completed in 1990 the Goodwin Square Hotel and Office Tower is another Hartford skyscraper built by the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. Goodwin Square used to contain the Goodwin Hotel but the hotel was closed in 2008 and the building slipped into foreclosure in 2010 as its owners defaulted on a $33 million dollar loan after purchasing the property for $41 million in 2005.
4) Mohegan Sun Resort - 487 feet
Located along the Thames River at 1 Mohegan Sun Boulevard in Uncasville is the 2nd largest casino in the United States the 34 story Mohegan Sun Resort. At 487 feet in height Mohegan Sun Resort is the 4th tallest building in Connecticut and a big economic powerhouse in the state that rakes in almost $2 billion dollars a year in revenue. Mohegan Sun Resort is also a hotel with 1,200 luxury guest rooms and suites and has a 10,000 seat arena, a convention center and nine restaurants.
5) Hartford 21 - 440 feet
Located at 221 Trumbull Street in downtown Hartford is the 440 foot high Hartford 21 luxury apartment tower. The 36 floor Hartford 21 Tower is the 4th tallest building in Hartford and 5th tallest building in Connecticut and also is the tallest apartment complex in New England. Hartford 21 has 232 luxury units including 4 penthouse suites and is adjacent to the XL Center which is a sports and convention center complex owned by the city of Hartford.
6) Connecticut Financial Center - 383 feet
Located at 157 Church Street in downtown New Haven right next to New Haven City Hall is the 383 foot high Connecticut Financial Center. Completed in 1993 the 26 story Connecticut Financial Center is located near the best hotels in New Haven and has Merrill Lynch, Bank of America and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court as tenants. Great views of the nearby Yale University Campus and the New Haven Harbor can be seen from the Connecticut Financial Center.
