Local Review: Kimganae Restaurant in Flushing, Queens NY
The menu at Kimganae includes popular dishes such as kimbap (rice rolled with other ingredients in seaweed), dupbap (rice with saucy meat of your choice), donkatsu (fried pork cutlet),and dukkbokki (rice cake in spicy sauce). The portions are huge, and the prices are low. Donkatsu will cost you about $9 per plate which is considered unbeatable for good Korean eats. For the more daring, the Pizza Donkatsu and the Spicy Tuna Kimbap are highly recommended. The Pizza Donkatsu consists of two fried pork cutlets covered in tomato sauce with a melted blend of mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top in a little pool of gravy. Rice, salad and corn are typically included with the Donkatsu. The Spicy Tuna Roll is another favorite at this eatery. The Spicy Tuna Roll has tuna that is spiced with hot sauce, pickled radish, and is wrapped in rice and seaweed.
The environment of the restaurant is very laid back. There is Korean music playing in the background, ranging from all types of genres and many artists. If this type of music does not interest you, or plainly annoys you, don't worry once you receive your food, you'll forget that it's there. The seats in the lower level are the best to sit in, because of the extra space and being closer to the radio.
The waiters here try their best to accompany everyone in the restaurant. Please understand that this is a fairly decent sized restaurant with at most two waiters for the whole house. Therefore, the only down-side about this restaurant is that table service can be quite slow at times. On any given day, there are only 2 waiters for 13 or so tables. Getting refills on water can be a challenge, sometimes taking more than 10 minutes and multiple requests. More often than not, you'll end up getting up to refill on water yourself.
This establishment has been around for many years. The food is excellent and cheap, thus appealing to the local teenagers that hang around in Flushing. However, the food is equally appreciated by all age groups.
