Largest Population Cities in New York

The largest population cities in New York State with each city having at least 100,000 residents.

New York State is home to five cities with populations over 100,000 people. Anybody familiar with the state can probably name four of the cities easily enough but one of the cities will probably surprise many people. The state has a long history of wealth building as many companies and industries located in New York but in recent times the population of upstate New York is on the decline. Still all of these cities have great visitor attractions as well as fine hotels and restaurants. These are the largest population cities in New York State.

1) New York City - 8.4 million

New York City is the most populated city in New York State and the United States with a population of 8.4 million people. Brooklyn is the largest borough of New York and by itself would rank as the 4th largest city in the country with 2.5 million residents. New York is one of the most visited cities in the world and great attractions in the Big Apple include the Empire State Building, Times Square and Broadway, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and tons of great hotels and restaurants.

2) Buffalo - 270,000

With a population of 270,000 Buffalo is the 70th largest city in the United States. Buffalo is a city with a declining population and a reputation for bad weather that is probably best known for being near Niagara Falls and for getting large snowstorms off Lake Ontario every winter as well as for delicious Buffalo Wings. As a major city at one time Buffalo still boasts some large hotels and great restaurants.

3) Rochester - 207,000

Rochester has a population of 207,000 which makes it the 98th largest city in the USA. The city of Rochester has a great history as an industrial area as it is the home of Eastman Kodak and Bausch & Lomb and the wealth created by such companies has created some beautiful homes and museums in the area. Both Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglas are buried in Rochester.

4) Yonkers - 201,000

How many people would guess that Yonkers is the 4th largest city in New York and the 107th largest population city in the United States? Yonkers is located just north of the Bronx and New York City in Westchester County and is home to the Hudson River Museum and Yonkers Raceway which is now a racino complete with video slot machines. Yonkers has plenty of good restaurants and hotels in the area.

5) Syracuse - 139,000

Syracuse is the 5th largest city in New York State and 176th largest in the country. Like Buffalo, Syracuse is another city with a declining population and a reputation for bad weather as Syracuse averages the most snowfall of any city its size in the United States at 116 inches per year. Syracuse is best known as the home of Syracuse University and the Orangemen as well as home to the Great New York State Fair every year in late summer which is one of the best state fairs in the USA.
